We are taking a look at some projects you might want to consider when it comes to woodworking around the house. The focus of our series is practical projects that can save you money in terms of purchases around the home. In this article, we will take a look at some home improvement projects that can add value to your home, help you improve your skills at the hobby, and leave you with something you can always be proud of. The projects we have listed are quite involved, so be prepared to invest a significant amount of time in them!

Deck: One of the most popular improvements to a home, a deck can create a whole new living space for you and your family, in the great outdoors. It is great for adding to one of the homes that a real estate agent has shown you or to complete with an aqua finishing solution for your cottage. They are great places to sit on a summer day or to have a bunch of co-workers and friends spend an evening around the barbecue. Decks are also projects which can be undertaken by woodworkers of all skill levels, from the novice to the expert. You have a range of options as far as wood types, deck design, and decorations as well. A great project, but one that is restricted somewhat by season!

Gazebo: If you want to give your backyard a bit of a Victorian or exotic touch, you might want to think about building a gazebo as a home improvement woodworking project. It is a great way to show off the extra space you have or make your backyard look like somewhere you could add some new. You can buy a mostly pre-fabricated one from a store, or take on the whole project by yourself. Obviously, building your own gazebo from scratch will take a lot of time and skill, but hey, it IS your hobby. Again, there are lots of choices when it comes to materials and style, and if you have a shop you can get a lot of the pre-assembly work done over the winter months.

Playhouse: Do you have kids or grandkids? A favourite woodworking project is an adventure land for the little ones. You can make everything from the building to the activities to the furniture inside. It's a project the kids in your life will always appreciate! And maybe if you're something like a lawyer who needs to work at home sometimes, it's a great way to get your kids out of the house and active.
