Whether you're starting your own restaurant or catering business or just having some friends over to your condo for dinner, you won't be a very successful cook unless you've got the right tools in your kitchen. For those of you who have just moved into your first place on your own and aren't sure what you need, this article will give you an idea of what you should put on your shopping list.

Utensils and Dishes

The basic gear that everyone knows they need in their condos are knives, forks, spoons, bowls, plates, and cups. But if you're planning on cooking, you'll also need more specialized utensils such as a mixing spoon, ladle, pasta lifter, spatula, flipper, cheese grater, cutting board, carving knife, paring knife, salad tongs, measuring cups, measuring spoons, wine glasses, shot glasses, a meat thermometer, a butter dish, a pitcher, coffee mugs, serving platters, a tray, napkins, and a salad bowl.

Pots and Pans

Cooking simply cannot be done without the vessels which contain the food while it's on the stove or in the oven. Your basic set of kitchen implements in you home should include a set of non-stick pots - small, medium, and large, all with lids - a small and a large frying pan which can be fitted with a lid. You will also need at least two baking sheets - one for meat and other foods and one specifically for cookies and baked goods. Pans, such as cake pans, loaf pans, and square pans, are also essential.

Mixing Equipment

When you're mixing up your concoctions, you will need some specialty utensils. A set of good mixing bowls, at least one of which is glass or ceramic and able to go in the microwave is a must. You may also want one of those granite slabs for rolling cookie dough or kneading bread dough. A pastry cutter is also useful for mixing, as are wooden spoons and a whisk, which can mix up chunky liquids. You may also want a shaker for making mixed drinks and gravy.

Appliances

Modern kitchens can't do without a few basic appliances, just make sure they're not all plugged into the same outlet unless you want to blow a fuse in your home. Everyone needs a microwave and a toaster or toaster oven. More proficient cooks and bakers will also want to have a blender or food processor as well as a stand or hand mixer, which can allow you to mix things like icing and whipped cream without getting Carpal Tunnel. Other kitchen essentials include a slow cooker, a kettle, a waffle iron or sandwich maker, and a George Foreman grill.
